Decolonizing the Body through Dance is a workshop based on the belief that decolonization is an inherently impossible act, yet worthy of pursuit. At its core, it is a workshop that values embodied expression, circular (non-hierarchical) learning and the generative process. This iteration of the workshop will be part movement class, part choreographic laboratory. The movement class will move away from a traditionally European-centered model (classical ballet, modern dance, etc) and towards a practice that honors Afro-Latin movement principles. Dancers will be encouraged to cultivate an intimate relationship with the ground, mobile spine and expressive pelvis, a social and playful improvisation, and circularity in their bodies. The choreographic laboratory will be a space for instigation and discovery, where dancers will be be given a chance to write, dialogue, generate and share their own material around the theme of decolonization.
Marina Magalhães is a choreographer, dancer, and teaching artist from Brazil based in Los Angeles. Magalhães’s work lives at the intersection between healing and provoking, social and concert dance, personal and political narrative, and traditional and contemporary practices. She has shared her unique movement approach throughout the US, Brazil, Cuba, Botswana and South Africa, earning her an LA Weekly Theater Award for Best Choreography and critical acclaim from LA Dance Review, “the type of show that keeps concert dance relevant in our lives”, and Creative Feel Magazine, “riveting… a physical and emotional feat”. She is constantly crossing borders, in dance and life, and thus, builds bridges.
While most WCCW programming is free or donation-based, with no one turned away for lack of funds, we do offer some workshops that have fees associated. This covers materials and allows us to pay the leaders of these workshops for their time and expertise, and to put a small percentage back into WCCW. This income, in addition to memberships, is what lets us keep the doors open and the lights on. We want to make programming as accessible as possible to anyone who is interested though, so we also offer volunteer opportunities and free community tickets to each event or workshop (number varies depending on capacity of the class). Email [email protected] for more info or to find out more about this opportunity for a specific event.
