Basic Auto Care: Understanding the Magic of the Combustion Engine
Sunday, April 17, 2016, 2-5pm
$10 WCCW Member / $15 Regular
Are you interested in understanding how your car works? Would you like to learn how to change a flat tire on the side of the road in case of an emergency? In this workshop we will discuss the basics of the combustion engine and how the various systems of a car work together. We will go under the hood and learn about checking fluids, important maintenance procedures to remember, an introduction to changing oil, and what to keep in a basic tool kit. Everyone will have an opportunity to replace a flat tire with a spare, as a hands-on component to the workshop.
Sarah Lyon is the creator of the Female Mechanics Calendar: a series of three 14-month wall calendars depicting real women mechanics working in their shop environments. As a motorcycle enthusiast and mechanic, Sarah rode her vintage BMW and Yamaha motorcycles around the country for three summers photographing and interviewing all types of women mechanics — auto, diesel, helicopter, city bus, marine, race car, jet airplane, bicycle, and motorcycle mechanics. She received a grant from the Kentucky Foundation for Women in support of the project, and distributed calendars to a global audience. The success of the project led to another grant opportunity teaching a motorcycle mechanics workshop for women in the summer of 2015. This experience has inspired Sarah to teach more mechanics workshops, expanding from motorcycles to automobiles to reach a broader audience.
While most WCCW programming is free or donation-based, with no one turned away for lack of funds, we do offer some workshops that have fees associated. This covers materials and allows us to pay the leaders of these workshops for their time and expertise, and to put a small percentage back into WCCW. This income, in addition to memberships, is what lets us keep the doors open and the lights on. We want to make programming as accessible as possible to anyone who is interested though, so we also offer volunteer opportunities and free community tickets to each event or workshop (number varies depending on capacity of the class). Email [email protected] for more info or to find out more about this opportunity for a specific event.
