Sung is the culinary extension of Korean-American painter Michelle Jane Lee’s art practice. She brings her vivid and visceral memories of food prepared and eaten in her childhood growing up in Korea — both the homemade and the regional specialties from around Korea and marries them in harmony with her artistic vision and sensitivity.
For Sung’s collaboration with FCCW, we are taking inspiration from the traditional Korean 잔치. 잔치 (janchi) in Korean means a feast or a banquet, but more importantly it is a gathering and a celebration of families and neighbors, where food always plays a center stage. It is rooted in communal cooking and eating that truly anchors communities small and big.
It feels more important than ever now, as we navigate a fragmented and isolated world, that we recall moments of communal joy and sharing in every way possible even through new and invented, but still familiar means. This meal is meant to be shared. For us, in the act of preparing this meal for you, and for you, your experience of enjoying it, we will all be part of the same janchi. So welcome, we’re so thrilled to have you at the table.
