In this workshop you will learn the basics of the combustion engine and how the systems of a car work together. Topics include tools, manuals, maintenance schedules, and finding a good mechanic. Projected images, diagrams, and actual parts and tools are used for reference, with opportunities for questions and participant dialogue throughout. For the hands-on part of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to practice changing a tire using the jack provided with their own car. We’ll go under the hood and talk about checking vital fluids, changing an air filter, and the process and materials needed for an oil change.
For anyone interested in personal empowerment through understanding more about cars.
Artist, freelance photographer, and part-time mechanic, Sarah Lyon has had a passion for understanding how things work from a young age. Her creative endeavors include several cross-country motorcycle trips documenting women mechanics working in their shops, and creating a cast bronze sculpture out of her old motorcycle boots. Sarah’s artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally, receiving support from the Kentucky Foundation for Women, ArtPlace America, and Creative Capital. As an educator, she has enjoyed teaching black and white darkroom photography at the university level. Based in Louisville, Kentucky and Joshua Tree, California, Sarah has led her Basic Auto Care Clinic at The Women’s Center for Creative Work, Pieter Performance Space in Los Angeles, her garage in Louisville, and at A-Z West in Joshua Tree.
